During the time of the Renaissance, many new forms and characteristics of art were used and still are today.
IndividualismIndividualism was not just a them but also a way of how art and architecture was crafted. During this time period, a focus of the individual mind grew as a shift from society as a whole and groups died down. This new concept was even seen through artwork. Self portraits and paintings of just one figure was a rapidly growing trend at the time.

Explicit DetailArtists were known for their extreme amounts of detail in their paintings. This was even to the point as such paintings requiring a microscope to paint each stroke so carefully. Even through architecture, explicit detail was shown in the careful carvings of stone, marble, and such in different techniques.

PersectiveThe use of perspective and linear perspective were new found characteristics still used today. Artist began to have a focal point of their piece that everything drew from. An example of this is Raphael's School of Athens as shown above.

SfumatoBy definition sfumato is "the technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms." Sfumato for short is blurring or hazing a painting or parts of it, for effect.

Anatomy and NudityWith and increase in morals and themes like humanism, the individual human became a more perfected image and was displayed in artwork. Artists portrayed the body in its "perfect state" and correct in proportions,

SymmetryArtists and architects began to use symmetry and began to base their works off symmetrical designs. This use of symmetry can probably be credited to the increase in science and mathematics during this time period showed the movement that was replaced by symmetry demonstrating the intellect of man.
